Auburn
Auburn looked around, somehow everything seemed different.
The usual clamour of the spring forest was gone, replaced by an uneasy silence,
no twittering birds carrying food to their fledglings, no fussy doe rabbits leading
their kittens, their scents smelled musty and old. Panic started to rise in his
chest, remembering fearful tales from his cubhood, had he slept through disaster?
He ran to the riverside; his glossy red fur flashing in the sun. It was just
like the forest here too; deserted, he looked down at the once clear water of
the stream and the crumbling bulrush stalks. The newts and the frogs that
usually filled the water were nowhere to be seen, Auburn’s ears pricked as a
loud sound penetrated the silent atmosphere.
Suddenly everything made sense, he shrank away as the truth dawned on him;
he shot of like a bullet from a pistol, his eyes wide with terror as his paws
pounded against the forest floor, his bushy tail rigid with fear, his paws
became worn and sore, his heart was thumping hard in his chest, he knew he
couldn’t stop, if he wanted his life. Pictures flashing in his head as he
recalled the cautioning stories told by his mother. As he reached the edge of
the forest he knew his life was through, there was no way of avoiding the
deadly clutches of the hunt in the open land. Panting, he collapsed, images
flickering past his eyes: horses, humans, dogs. The last thing he saw was ten
sets of deadly jaws before life was ripped from his body.
