The Story of Gregory Tillmon
Page 2
Greg keeps thinking about the note that Nicole had wrote him. He didn’t exactly ‘regret’ the decision; it just wasn’t exactly how he had envisioned his first time to be.
Fortunately, he was able to overcome those feelings due to his uncontrollable sense of accomplishment.
He continues his senior year with a secret that gave him a bit of confidence. Everything stayed fairly normal and Greg keeps in touch with Nicole through sporadic phone calls. Tim falls in love with Allison, the shy brunette he met at the party.
While Greg is in the process of deciding which one of the Ivy League college acceptance letters that he would respond to; his mother becomes ill. After a series of tests, and a few weeks, it is confirmed that Greg’s mother is in serious need of a blood donor due to her severe anemia. Because of the rarity of her blood type, her doctor suggests that she look to her family for donors.
As it turns out, Greg, his mother’s only child happens to have the same blood type as her ‘o-negative’. Eager to see his mom healthy again, he donated his blood to her immediately, without question.
A few months have passed, and Greg’s mom seems to be happy and healthy. Greg is in college now; he and Tim are attending Harvard together. Everything was running smoothly, Tim and Allison are engaged, and Greg is enjoying Harvard.
(Ring! Ring!)
Greg: “Hey Tim, can you get that man?”
Tim: (picks up the phone and answers) “It’s your mom, come here.”
Greg: “Mom?”
Mom: “Hi Sweetie”
Greg: “How are you? How’ve you been feeling lately?”
Mom: “I’m doing great, actually and I have some good news for you.”
Greg: “Oh really? What is it?” (Without any expectance of her next statement)
Mom: “I’m pregnant.”
Greg: “What?” (In shock) “Pregnant?! Was this planned?”
Mom: Well, no, but me and your dad were excited once we thought about it, I think it will be turn out great.”
At this time Greg realized that his mom was really happy about this and decided to put his own opinions aside.
Greg: “Oh ok, well that’s great then, I guess. You can tell me about it each step of the way on the phone, and I should be down in about a month to see you and dad.”
Mom: “That sounds great, sweetie. I can’t wait to see you.”
Greg: “Ok mom, well I’ve gotta get to class, but congratulations, and I’ll call you in a few days.
Mom: “Ok bye baby, take care.”
Greg is a little taken back by the news, but decides to focus on being happy for his parents.
A few months pass by, and Greg’s mom’s pregnancy gets through the first trimester without a hitch. Everyone hoped that it would turn out fine, but were concerned because of her medical history.
Mom: “There’s something wrong, I just know it.”
She calls and talks to him about everything going on, with sadness in her voice that he just can’t deal with.
Greg: “I’ll be down there as soon as I can, I love you.”
He ends the conversation and immediately makes arrangements to visit his mother. He finds himself at his parent’s house the next morning. He accompanies his mom to the hospital, but is frustrated with his inability to help her.
As each day passes, everyone begins to realize the severity of the situation, and becomes more and more concerned.
The phone rings at the dinner table
Dad: “Hello?” “Ok, she’s right here next to me.”
Mom: “hello? (Concerned by urgency of the phone call) what happened? What’s wrong?” “ Oh, ok, I see then...well thank you for letting me know as soon as you found out.”
She says, while choking back the tears. She slams down the phone and runs to the bathroom in hysterics. Greg and his dad are very worried, and persist on finding out what the doctor had told her.
Mom: “He said that I have AIDS! (Uncontrollably crying)
Greg and his father are paralyzed by the news. There was nothing that either of them could do or say to help her. Unknowing of what to do next, they sit on the couch in silence.
Mom: (comes out of the bathroom) “You bastard! You son of a b...., you cheated on me, didn’t you?! Look at what you’ve done to your wife!”
Dad: (shocked by her accusations) “What the hell are you talking about?! I have never cheated on you! You know that god damnit!”
Greg’s mom realizes that she is just completely torn apart and looking for someone to blame.
Mom: “Then how the hell else can you explain this? We always use condoms to avoid pregnancy, So I couldn’t have gotten it from you, even if you did have AIDS!” (still in hysterics)
Greg: (humble and hesitant) “If you guys always use condoms, then how did mom get pregnant?”
Greg’s parents look at each other, and recall the night the child was conceived.
Mom: “We didn’t use a condom.”
Dad: “So that means I must have it too, right?” (in disbelief)
Greg’s mom looks at her husband and starts crying. They embrace each other and tried to relax, but they were still completely perplexed by the situation.
Mom: Did you give it to me? Or did I give it to you? How did either of us get it in the first place? (frantic)
Once it sunk in for Greg that both of his parents were going to be short lived, he became extremely depressed and dropped out of college. His entire world had fallen apart from something that he couldn’t get rid of. He didn’t understand why this had to happen to him, why do his parents have to die, when he loves them so much?
Greg was living with his parents in order to share with them the limited time they had left. He hadn’t spoken to anyone about it yet, because it was just too painful to put into words.
(Ring! Ring!)
Greg answers the phone immediately, in case it was a doctor.
Greg: “Hello?”
Nicole: “Hey”
Greg was not ready to talk to anyone yet, but hearing Nicole’s voice evoked sweet memories of his childhood and it comforted him so he decided to talk to her for a little while.
Nicole: “Are you there?”
Greg: “Yah I’m here.” (Clears his throat)
Nicole: “Oh my gosh, it’s so good to hear your voice, how have you been?”
Greg has heard this question numerous times before, but this time, it was such a weighted subject. He pauses for a little while and quickly contemplates whether or not to tell her about his parents. She had grown up with them too, and this would probably upset her as well but suddenly, lost in the honesty of their friendship, he decides to tell her.
Greg: “Nicole, I just found out that both of my parents have AIDS.”
There is a long pause from Nicole, which is expected at first, but then it becomes intriguing.
Nicole: (in hysterics) “I have something to tell you.”
Greg is dumbfounded by her reaction. He just told her that his parents were dying and she has something to tell him?
He didn’t understand, so remained silent.
Nicole: “I really should have told you a long time ago, I can’t believe I let this happen.”
Greg: “Okay.” (Not at all expecting her to say something that serious)
Nicole: (decides to say everything as fast as she can, because it’s the only way she knows how) “ About a year ago I contracted AIDS from a man that raped me.”
Greg is stunned by what she said, but doesn’t quite realize the importance.
Nicole:” Remember when you told me that you donated blood to your mom and I started crying?”
Greg: “Yah, you told me it was just because you felt bad for my mom.”
Nicole: “I did feel bad for your mom. I do feel bad for your mom!” (Crying)
While she’s crying, it hits him that not only were his parents going to die, but so was Nicole, and this is a lot for him to process.
Nicole: “Remember the party at the lake?”
Greg: “yah, of course I do, why?”
Nicole’s next statement ends the play, and the lives of four innocent people.
Nicole: “We didn’t use a condom.”
