A majority of Hindu thinkers, believe that 'transmigration of consciousness' happens at conception, and therefore research on stem cells is wrong. However, the scriptures are not unanimous on when life begins.
Buddhists, like the hindus, equate sentience and the start of life, but they differ on when it begins. Historically, however, some buddhists believed that life began in the third or fourth month of pregnancy.
The Catholic Church believes that life begins with the union of sperm and egg. Conservative protestants, though less vocally, accept the idea.
The Greek orthodox church believes that even though not yet a human, an embryo should not be sacrificed.
Islamic tradition describes an ambryo as a 'drop of matter' till it's 40 days old, meaning that it has not yet been infused with a soul. This is thought to take place after 120 days.
According to Jewish law, during the first 40 days of gestation, embryos are considered 'as if they were simply water'. Such an embryo has the moral status as male and female gametes.
